If I stay
is a novel that talk about a
seventeen years old girl named Mia hall as the main character of
the novel. She has happy
life with her families, friends and her boyfriend, Adam. Mia hall is a
musician, she is a cellist in Julliard (music school in New York). Her
Dad is a retired rock-n-roll band, Mom is a former punk-like musician, Her boyfriend, Adam is also a musician. They have
many dreams in their future. They had happy life together at the beginning.
One day, she deals with the
aftermath of a catastrophic car accident involving her family. Mia is
the only member of her family to survive, and she finds herself in a coma. At first, disbelief and denial is
the reaction from Mia at realizing that her whole family, herself being the
exception, died on impact from the four-ton pickup truck. Mia is under the
impression that she is dead, hovering over the scene until an EMT places and
oxygen mask over her face; she is in a coma but alive. Through this coma, however, Mia has an out-of-body
experience.
Mia's aspiration and motivation for applying to Juilliard,
her desire to live included, is brutally ripped from her conscience. She
manages to slip into the ambulance and rides to the local hospital to find her
grandparents waiting. Mia's boyfriend and rock-band singer, Adam, arrives in the
hospital room where she is being treated. Mia Hall is in serious condition, with a collapsed lung, ruptured
spleen, internal bleeding, and damage to her brain. She hears a nurse say that
the young girl's life is not in the hands of the doctors or the machines. It is
Mia herself who is in control of whether she lives or dies.
Mia walk around in the hospital seeing her grandparent and
Adam his boyfriend beside her body. She tries to remember the pieces of her
memories with people
she loved. Her memories
include being present at the birth of her brother, her father's transformation
from a hard rocker to a teacher, her friendship with Kim, her love for music
and the cello, her ambitions to become a great cellist, and falling in love
with Adam. Her memories of him and the dynamics of their differences in the
music genre. It all starts with Mia meeting Adam, through him watching her
practice which launches them into meeting regularly and talking about music.
Adam suggests a date, the first of many, that ends in a recital, a concert, a
handful of dinners, and lastly him going on tour with his band and her
auditioning to Juilliard. It is the conversations between Mia and Adam that
captured her attention and is the leading reason that she is still letting
herself live.
Deciding to remain alive or let
herself die is the pivotal challenge that Mia is faced with. Her grandparents
both agree, and tell her without knowing that she can see as well as hear them,
that both understand if she wants to leave.
“ It's okay, If you
want to go. Everyone wants you to stay. I want you to stay more than I've ever
wanted anything in my life. But that's what I want and I could see why it might
not be what you want. So I just wanted to tell you that I understand if you go.
It's okay if you have to leave us. It's okay if you want to stop fighting.” -
Grandpa
Adam is the opposite, encouraging Mia
to fight for her life and wake-up from her coma. “If you stay, I'll do whatever you want. I'll quit the band,
go with you to New York. But if you need me to go away, I'll do that, too. I
was talking to Liz and she said maybe coming back to your old life would be too
painful, that maybe it'd be easier for you to erase us. And that would suck,
but I'd do it. I can lose you like that if I don't lose you today. I'll let you
go.” – Adam. Mia is faced with the reality that if
she does fight and walk out of this accident alive, she will be alone with no
family; however, if she dies then she will be leaving her grandparents and Adam
behind. Her grief and loyalty to the deceased family is undeniably while her
love for Adam and sympathy for her grandparents that have lost everyone within
a matter of minutes is equally as strong.
Mia begins to consider what her life would be like if she
stays. Eventually, she determines that although having her die will hurt those
who love her, they will recover. It is too difficult to think about living in a
world where she has suffered so much loss. However, before she can let go, Adam
arrives and puts headphones over her ears, allowing her to hear a piece of
music by her favorite cellist, Yo Yo Ma, whose concert they attended on their
first date. This causes Mia to think about not only what she has lost, but also
about what might still be ahead of her.
The
story ends with Mia unconsciously arguing with herself about the life she
wants. It is a stunning result that she finally makes the decision and fights
for her life, to keep living regardless of the cost.
